Troop 8 has been a continuously operating unit of the Boy Scouts of America since 1919. We are based in Bethesda, Maryland.
-
We provide opportunities for Boys from ages 11-17 to experience the outdoors, learn outdoor skills, provide community service, and grow through leadership experience in a well structured advancement program.
-
Our 2009-2010 program focuses on diverse outdoor activities that include backpacking, camping, canoeing, bicycling, skiing, and shooting sports. We will attend summer camp in June at Ockanickon Scout Reservation, where the Dan Beard program for recently graduated Cub Scouts is a great introduction to Boy Scouting. We regularly have boys of 14 years and older participate in Troop and BSA-sponsored high adventure trips; this coming July, a Troop 8 crew will travel to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico for a long-distance backpacking trip.
-
In March of 2010 the Troop will inaugurate use of its new camp on Catoctin Mountain. This camp replaces the Troop’s beloved Camp Livingstone, which was in use from 1930-2004.
-
The Troop provides community service support to the Audubon Society, Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad, Capital Area Food Bank, YMCA Youth and Family Services, the Rotary Club Foundation and other local church, civic and health care organizations.
-
Troop meetings are held every Monday evening at 7:30 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes school in Bethesda, MD. Visitors are welcome. Outdoor activities are conducted at least once a month. Please browse our event calendar
-
Our sponsoring organization is the Westlake Troop 8 BSA Memorial Foundation. William Westlake was a Troop 8 Scoutmaster for 35 years, who bequeathed his estate for the benefit of youth organizations in the Washington, DC area.
