Ockanickon June 2011
Troop 8 will be attending summer camp at Ockanickon Scout Reservation from June 19 - June 25, 2011. Transportation plans will be announced at a later date.
The Ockanickon program is well suited to both new scouts and Scouts advancing toward higher ranks. The first year Scout program, known as the ‘Dan Beard’ program, involves directed instruction in a number of areas, and boys who participate will complete many of the requirements of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks. They will also earn several merit badges, typically including Swimming and Fire Safety. Scouts who have crossed over to the Troop from Cub Scouting in 2011 will participate in the ‘Dan Beard’ program. Details on the Dan Beard program schedule from last year have been reproduced below.
Mr. Mullin encourages all experience Scouts to participate in three merit badge programs of their choice. However, Scouts should not ignore possibilities for other activities such as COPE, GPS, Discover SCUBA, Open Sailing. You won’t find these activities on the one-page Master Schedule. You need to dip into the Detailed merit badge department information.
Dan Beard Program details (for 2011)
The Dan Beard Department runs a full-week day-long first year Scout program to help new Scouts quickly fulfill many requirements for ranks up to First Class as well as gain experience with patrol camping and activities. The Full Day program is the cornerstone of the department and program is both fun and comprehensive.
Every day the Scouts meet in the Dan Beard field at 9:15 for the morning and 2:00 for the afternoon. For Tuesday through Friday in the afternoon there are four stations. A patrol goes to a different station everyday. Once the patrol has gathered in Dan Beard, they will go to a station with their Patrol Guide.
